NU106 - Fundamentals in Nursing

Prerequisites or Concurrent: BIO130/BIO130L and GS100 or GS102 with a grade of “C” or better

This course will introduce students to the basic principles and concepts of nursing practice. Students will begin to recognize the significance of health care practices across the life span and will be introduced to the Clinical Judgement Model (nursing process). Students will begin to integrate the core values of physiological, psychosocial, cultural, and spiritual dimensions of health promotion.

NU107 - Fundamentals in Nursing Clinical

Prerequisites or Concurrent: BIO130/BIO130L and GS100 or GS102 with a grade of “C” or better

: NU106 and NU108

In this course, students will be introduced to the fundamental concepts of clinical care of clients across the life cycle. Students will be exposed to the Clinical Judgement Model (CJM) and will begin to develop nursing plans of care/concept maps. An emphasis will be placed on client safety and infection prevention.

NU108 - Physical Assessment

Prerequisites or Concurrent: BIO130/BIO130L and GS100 or GS102 with a grade of “C” or better
Corequisites: NU106 and NU107

This course is designed to assist students in acquiring knowledge of basic physical and psychosocial skills related to nursing practice and health promotion. Emphasis will be on normal assessment findings and recognizing deviations from normal.

NU120 - Health Preservation

Prerequisites: BIO130/BIO130L , GS100 or GS102, NU106, NU107, NU108
Prerequisite or Concurrent: BIO131/BIO131L and PSY101
Corequisite: NU121

In this course the student will be implementing the clinical judgement (CJM) model to formulate a patient plan of care.  The CJM will guide the student to implement a plan of care to return patients to their optimal health and wellness through core values of physiological, psychosocial, and cultural dimensions.

NU121 - Health Preservation Clinical

Prerequisites: BIO130/BIO130L , GS100 or GS102, NU106, NU107, NU108
Prerequisite or Concurrent: BIO131/BIO131L and PSY101
Corequisite: NU120

In this course, clinical and lab experiences are planned to aid the student to care for patients in the realm of health preservation. The focus will be on patients across the life cycle with an emphasis on restoring and maintaining optimal health. Clinical skills will be introduced in the nursing lab and reinforced in a variety of health care settings using the Clinical Judgement Model (CJM).

NU190 - Nursing Assessment Extension

This course is designed to enhance the health assessment skills of prelicensure nursing students by addressing gaps in foundational knowledge and practice. Emphasizing a comprehensive approach the course integrates theoretical concepts with practical application to improve proficiency in identifying normal and abnormal findings across the lifespan. Content will include techniques in health history collection and the interpretation of findings. Through interactive lectures, discussion board interaction and case-based scenarios, students will increase confidence in completing a systematic assessment while utilizing evidence-based approaches to support clinical decision-making. This course is designed to strengthen their foundational health assessment skills and expand their clinical competencies in the interpretation of findings.

NU214 - Health Restoration II

In this course, the nursing process and clinical judgement will be used to identify nursing care needs of patients experiencing acute and chronic endocrine, hematological, musculoskeletal, respiratory, shock, burns, cancer, sensory and immunological health deviations. Clinical experience within acute care and/or community-based settings provide an opportunity for practical application of related material.

NU217 - Pediatric Nursing

In this course the nursing process and clinical judgement will be utilized to provide a foundation for nursing of children and their families from birth through adolescence. The nurse’s role in health promotion, health maintenance and health restoration will be emphasized. Clinical experience within acute care and/or community-based settings provide an opportunity for practical application of related material.

In this course the nursing process and clinical judgement will be utilized in providing care to patients experiencing psychosocial health deviations. The focus will be on health promotion, health maintenance, and health restoration. NU222 - Health Restoration III

Prerequisites: BIO223, BIO223L, GS100 or GS102, NU110, NU112, NU114, NU115, NU116, NU122, NU124, NU214, NU217
Prerequisite or Concurrent: NU220

In this course the nursing process and clinical judgement will be utilized provide students with learning activities for patients experiencing acute and complex health deviations. Topics related to acute cardiovascular, neurological, and renal health deviations, endocrine, and disaster preparedness will be presented. Students are expected to function more independently, using previous knowledge and experience in assuming the role of educator, manager of care and member of the interdisciplinary team in the delivery of patient care. Clinical experience within acute care and/or community-based settings provide an opportunity for practical application of related material. A weekly seminar further promotes application of NCLEX concepts.

NU230 - Health Restoration: Acute/Simple

The course course will examine the response of individuals encountering acute illness. The emphasis will be on health restoration for patients at various stages of maturity across the life span. Students will apply leadership to deliver prioritization and delegation of care.

NU231 - Health Restoration: Acute/Simple Clinical

Prerequisites: BIO130/BIO130L, BIO131/BIO131L, GS100 or GS102, NU106, NU107, NU108, NU120, NU121, PSY101

Corequisite: NU230

In this course, clinical and lab experiences are planned to aid the student to care for patients with acute/simple health problems. The focus will be on adult, maternal/child, and pediatric patients in the management of care utilizing the Clinical Judgement Model.

In this course the student will use the Clinical Judgement Model to synthesize the care for clients experiencing acute, chronic and complex health deviations. Previous knowledge and experience will be integrated into assuming the role of nurse and member of the interdisciplinary team in the delivery of client care

In this course, the student will use the Clinical Judgement Model to transition from nursing theory into the role of a new registered nurse and member of the interdisciplinary team. Clinical and laboratory experiences will focus on the delivery of care to clients with acute/chronic/complex health problems. The professional role of the nurse in the care of the clients with multiple system problems and mental health comorbidities will emphasize clinical judgment and reasoning.

NU242- Pharmacology for Nurses

This course is designed to promote student nurses to acquire basic knowledge in the science and administration of medications throughout the lifecycle. Within each drug class, a prototype will be selected and studied in more detail, including the indication, safe administration, nursing implications, education, and evaluation of the patients’ response to the medication.  In addition to classifications/prototypes, a survey of basic pharmacological principles, terminology, cultural implications, and legislation will be included.
