HCM200 - Advanced Medical Terminology

This course is designed for individuals who may have experience in the healthcare field but lack formal educational training on uses and applications of medical terminology.  Students will have the opportunity to demonstrate sufficient mastery via a competency exam. In this course, students not only learn and understand medical terms themselves, but also their application, making them a valuable asset to a healthcare team.

HCM312 - Diversity and Teambuilding

Students in this course learn how to foster and maintain an effective diverse workforce, starting from building an effective team, to managing for results, through to the ultimate goal of achieving greater organizational success through improved teamwork.

HCM315 - Critical Management Communications

This course teaches critical skills including how to manage the complex dynamics in the workplace by improving interpersonal communications, and effectively addressing the challenges that are presented across various industries.

HCM330 - Strategic Planning

Students in this course will explore leading-practice models and approaches for strategic planning. These models will include environmental scanning, establishing strategic goals and priorities, developing implementation strategies and change initiatives, performance measurement and evaluation, and communicating strategy and performance to diverse categories of stakeholders.

Prerequisites: HIT201, HCI320, HCM312, BU300

HCM 335 – Legal Structures and Public Programs in Healthcare

This accelerated 7-week, 300-level course explores the legal structures of healthcare organizations and examines how public and non-public definitions shape access, funding, and accountability in the U.S. healthcare system. Through focused analysis of Medicare, Medicaid, and New York State healthcare frameworks, students will gain insight into how legal and regulatory foundations impact strategic management, operations, and policy.

HCM 341 – Healthcare Financial Management

This accelerated 7-week, 300-level course in Healthcare Financial Management is designed for undergraduate healthcare management students and other healthcare related students. The offering provides a foundation in financial principles and tools as applied in healthcare organizations. Students learn how hospitals, clinics, and other providers manage finances, covering budgeting, financial reporting, and reimbursement systems. The course balances theory and practice by using a standard textbook alongside open-source readings (e.g. industry reports, government websites) to incorporate up-to-date policy information. Key topics include healthcare accounting basics, budget planning and variance analysis, federal payer systems (Medicare/Medicaid, ACA) and state-specific financial issues (with examples from New York’s healthcare system). By the end, students will be able to apply financial management concepts to real-world healthcare scenarios and complete a comprehensive case study analysis.

HCM 342 – Artificial Intelligence and Healthcare Management

This accelerated 7-week course introduces students to the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into key areas of healthcare management. Students explore how AI is reshaping operational workflows, financial decision-making, workforce strategies, patient experience, quality improvement, policy, and strategic planning in healthcare. Through hands-on simulations, case studies, and ethical debates, students gain a critical understanding of the potential and limitations of AI tools in a healthcare setting.

HCM440 - Externship Seminar

This course will allow students to demonstrate integration of baccalaureate allied health knowledge into management practice.  All students complete 115 practicum hours. Emphasis is on critical thinking, communication, leadership, management and evaluation. Application of core concepts pertaining to corporate social responsibility and ethics will be highlighted. Students will work with the advisor and instructor to secure externship placements.
